Twelve Literary Arts

Where tradition meets innovation

Twelve Literary and Performative Arts Incubator is an intergenerational teaching, learning, workshop, and performance space for poets, playwrights and performance artists. We support and develop writers and performers who have a deep desire to create imaginative literary works with an emphasis on social transformation and restorative justice. The number "12" symbolically represents the building of transformative institutions. Our organization's name; therefore, is a reflection of our core commitment to nurture youth and adults in the mission of creating literary works that inspire communities to dream and build more just and equitable communities. Twelve Literary and Performative Arts Incubator is founded upon three principles:

Twelve Education is comprised of four projects:

1. Room 201: Our workshops and residencies are facilitated by our professional teaching artists and teaching interns. Room 201 education is hosted at Twelve and offsite.

2. The One Mic Open performance poetry fellowship: Our gateway to the national Brave New Voices Festival.

3. Professional Development Workshops for teachers: Our teacher development workshops help teachers and administrators improve classroom climate, academic success, socio-emotional learning, and culturally-relevant pedagogy.

Baldwin House Urban Writing Residency: Located inside Twelve Literary and Performative Arts Incubator, the Baldwin House Urban Writing Residency offers talented poets and writers a comfortable, rich environment in which to immerse themselves in the process of beginning or continuing projects for the page and stage. Baldwin House writers are in residence for six weeks in a cohort of seven writers and one lead facilitator. Baldwin House writers are surrounded by others of like mind to receive feedback, pushback, and other key areas of support in developing milestones to bring their projects to a place they consider worthy of sharing with a an audience. The next Baldwin House residency period is April 3 - May 23. Deadline to submit work for consideration is March 3rd.

Twelve has become home to some of Northeast Ohio's most experimental creative projects: From poetry slam competitions to collaborative projects between DJ's and writers to staged readings of one act plays to local debuts of international independent films, Twelve champions the cause of experimental work in a time and place where experimentation is the key to transformation.
