Twelve Literary Arts

An ecosystem for poets and writers of color

Twelve Literary Arts is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) literary arts and education organization founded by Executive Artistic Director Daniel Gray-Kontar in May 2016.

Currently based in historic Glenville on Cleveland's east side, Twelve Literary Arts has a 13-person Board of Directors, which formed in May 2017. The organization's original name was Twelve Literary and Performative Arts Incubator, but in June 2017 the organization shortened its name to Twelve Literary Arts.

At its inception, Twelve Literary Arts placed an emphasis on providing quality literary arts programming for youth, offering writing workshops for adults, and operating as a small performance venue for emerging poets and playwrights.

In June 2017 the organization ceased operating as a small arts venue and focused on (1) providing literary arts instruction and mastery to middle and high-school aged youth, (2) supporting beginning to mid-career adult poets and writers with professional development, performance, and publishing opportunities, and (3) broadening the audience for performance poetry in Northeast Ohio by bringing poetry to public spaces.

Twelve Literary Arts became a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt arts and education organization in October 2017.

Working in collaboration with other community and arts organizations, Twelve Literary Arts has played a key role in making poetry more accessible to new audiences, developing a cadre of young talent committed to writing in and about Cleveland, and contributing to the local dialogue about the arts and social transformation.
